1. Uninstall and reinstall the printer driver.

Cleaning is the best option and could be easily done taking care so as not to ruin the ink cartridge in the process. To clean most HP ink cartridge contacts use a Q-tip and some Windex and gently pass by the contacts. Let it dry well before you reinsert the ink cartridge in the printer.
